Minor improvements and small iterations can often be included within a retainer, depending on how it's scoped. Significant new features are usually scoped and priced separately, so you have a clear view of the cost before any work begins.
In practice, many of our maintenance clients eventually want to build on top of what we're maintaining — and because we already understand the system, the transition to active development is faster and lower risk than bringing in a new team. We can discuss both tracks from the start.
The first months after launch often feel stable — and then something shifts. A dependency releases a breaking update. Traffic grows and a performance issue that was invisible at lower volumes suddenly becomes real. A browser update changes how something renders. A third-party API changes its behaviour.
None of these are dramatic failures. But without someone watching the system and keeping it current, small issues accumulate into large ones. The cost of reactive fixes — especially urgent ones — is almost always higher than the cost of preventative maintenance.
That said, the right level of maintenance varies. We'll be honest about what your system actually needs rather than recommending a larger retainer than is justified.

Response times are defined in the SLA we agree before the engagement starts. For most clients, critical issues — anything that stops the system functioning for end users — are responded to within a few hours, with a fix or workaround in place the same day. Less severe issues follow a longer but still defined timeline.
The more important question is: how quickly do we know something is broken? With proper monitoring in place, we often know before your users do. We set this up as part of onboarding — if your system doesn't have it already, it's one of the first things we put in place.
It depends on what we agree upfront, which is why we define scope explicitly before we start. A typical maintenance retainer covers monitoring, dependency updates, security patching, bug fixing within agreed SLA times, and regular reporting.
What's usually outside scope: new feature development, major architectural changes, and issues caused by third-party services outside our control. If something comes up that's outside the retainer, we tell you immediately, scope it separately, and let you decide how to proceed. No surprises, no grey areas.
Yes — this is one of the most common situations we work in. Before we take on any existing system, we do a short technical review to understand what we're dealing with: the architecture, the dependencies, the state of monitoring, and any known issues.
That review gives you an honest picture of what you're actually sitting on. If there are significant risks, we'll tell you before we agree to a maintenance scope — not after we've taken responsibility for something we didn't fully understand. From there we agree on what the maintenance covers and what it doesn't.
